This study presents the development of a bio-based and intelligent food packaging system designed for perishable animal-origin foods. In response to the environmental concerns associated with conventional petroleum-based plastics, polylactic acid (PLA) was selected as a biodegradable alternative. However, to overcome its inherent brittleness and improve its mechanical and barrier properties, polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) was incorporated as a plasticizer. Additionally, anthocyanins extracted from Andean blackberry waste, a rich and underutilized source of natural pigments in Colombia, were integrated into the PLA matrix to serve as pH-sensitive freshness indicators. The films were characterized through various techniques, including SEM, FTIR, TGA-MS, DSC, tensile and rheological testing, OTR, WVTR, HPLC, migration analysis, and colorimetry. Finally, a packaging test using chicken breast was conducted to evaluate the films’ performance and colorimetric response. This research supports sustainable food packaging innovation by combining biodegradable materials with natural indicators for enhanced food safety and reduced environmental impact.
